The built environment sector is considered as one that has a substantial effect on climate change. A
new Dutch law states that offices need to have minimum energy label C at 01-01-2023 (Rijksoverheid,
n.d.). This means that corporate real estate managers, office owners and investors in corporate real
estate (CRE) need to make decisions on how to meet this requirement.
Research on the topic of corporate real estate in combination with sustainability management is
scarce, although a few studies have been conducted many topics can be researched. The gap in
research this thesis tries to fill is to give an overview how CRE managers think they can improve their
CRE with sustainability measures and which benefits these sustainable measures have for the
organization.
For this the following research questions has been formulated:
‘Which sustainable measures are corporate real estate managers (thinking of) taking and which
benefits do they expect to gain from this?’
The research starts with a literature study on the topics of corporate real estate, sustainability and
corporate real estate sustainability management, and to identify sustainable measures and benefits.
Then the research design is explained, with explanation of the methods, the interview protocol and
the validity of the research is discussed. Thereafter interviews are conducted with corporate real
estate managers from several companies to identify links between sustainable measures and benefits.
Out of these steps the research questions are answered. Lastly a conclusion and limitations of the
research are discussed and implication for practice and further research are given.
